How did the members of “Bevar Sea” meet`?
Ganesh: Srikanth and Chacko know each other for a bit, Deepak and Chacko used to play together in Madras and I’ve known Avinash for a while. So, it’s just the functioning of the cosmos that brought us together, the whole right-place-right-time thing.
What bands inspired you when you were starting out, pre and post-convicted? what do you see as the primary difference in mentality between underground metal bands and the people you hear on the radio?
Ganesh: We’re all 60/70s children. Blue Oyster Cult, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Witchfinder General, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Rush, Black Sabbath, are some of the bands that inspire us from that era. Apart from them we are inspired by more ‘recent’ bands like Orange Goblin, Electric Wizard, the Melvins, Grand Magus, Sleep, High on Fire, etc
Music in the mainstream media is made of the mainstream, for the mainstream, by the mainstream. Underground music is made up of fans and bands, music is produced by the bands, for themselves and their fans.
Tell us more about your debut album
Ganesh: Total DIY experience. Everything was recorded at home, except the drums. It features four songs that sums up the band’s first year in existence. We’re expecting a late July/early August release. That’s about that for now.
How does your band feel to be performing at the first ever Bangalore Open Air amidst other popular bands? Where do you think metal will go next with such gigs?
Ganesh: We’re chuffed. The debut edition of BOA is going to be a party for us. We’re on at 1 in the afternoon and this gives us the chance to wrap our set, grab a few beers, and bang head. To those reading this, get there early so we can get in on the act \m/
Is there any kind of a message you want to try bringing out in your song? How do you think your lyrics will have an impact on the Indian audience?
Ganesh: The songs deal with subjects of horror, serial killers, war and apathy, the New Order, etc. Essentially, all the subjects your mothers, fathers, teachers, preachers warned you about, don’t want you to know more about. Armageddon is nigh, bitches!!
As a band, what do feel about selling music online and illegal music downloads? Do you think it has hit the genre metal positively or negatively
Ganesh: I download/stream music too. But if I find an artist/band that I really like, I go out and buy their vinyl (or CD if vinyls aren’t available). While ‘piracy’ aids virality it does burn a hole in the bands’ pockets. I’m a fan of the internet, and I support music sales online.
What would you like to say to aspiring musicians/ start up bands?
Ganesh:
Rehearse.
Buy quality equipment.
Be in it for the long haul.
Stop bitching and complaining.
Drink beer. Bark at the moon.
