Gig Review – Doc Daneeka, M.Mat, Moniker at Bonobo

Electronic music has caught quite some attention of late of peoples across the country.  Along the same time there has been a rise in electronic music events, activities and international artists in the country as well. Which came first or what caused what is difficult to make out but the fact remains Electronica fanbase in the country has strengthened. A number of event organizations have popped up at various parts of the country to support this movement viz., Submerge (pioneers & veterans of the scene), Wildcity, Krunk, etc. An eventful electronica gig year is already in schedule with more exciting ikely to be added soon.

WildCity in line with their objectives presented the debut tour of Doc Daneeka. Doc Daneeka represents one of the most exciting new sounds to emerge out of the European bass music scene. He recently released his debut album ‘They!Live’ in collaboration with another Wales based producer Benjamin Damage. The album was released on Modeselektor’s label 50 Weapons. Doc Daneeka aka Mial Watkins has also been recently labeled as “the King of Wales” by online US mag XLR8R. He has also released on labels such as Ramp, Fabric, PTN and Well Rounded. Doc has been making quite an impact in the underground scene with releases, remixes and collaboration with numerous other artists. The man also runs a label called Ten Thousand Yen. With an extensive tour across Europe last year, the man has been wanted for gigs and stuff across the globe.

The event was a free for all event held at a popular nightclub in Mumbai, Bonobo.  The venue is known to be host to a number of underground acts with artists/ djs/ producers/performers of various genres performing here. It is also host to the other events WildCity has held in the city.  The Venue is spread over a posh 5000-10,000 sq. ft. area located in Bandra, Mumbai. It consists of an Open-air Bar area and a music area. The music area is a soundproof room and apt considering the location it is situated. The size of this room however is small and things can get cramped beyond ones’ comfort level at times. The Bar area is an open-air terrace kind of area which makes up  more than 2/3rd of the club.  At rare occasions gigs are held in the Open area as well.

The event was smooth running throughout. The venue was mildly packed initially and built up as the night progressed. Young – Middle aged Electro heads of the city were present to witness what this Bass prodigy had to showcase for them. Being a friday night, the club must has also got the usual party crowd who might have been pleasantly surprised to see the event taking place.

DJ Moniker, WildCity’s resident DJ was present at the event like always. He has built a good reputation over the years playing alongside some great artists. He plays a electro mash consisting of various genres that is related to bass driven grooves and funky melodies. Some fans might have be present at the event just to see him perform.

DJ M.Mat was the other artist on the lineup. M.Mat aka Mathieu Josso is a French DJ specialising in house and techno. He has been performing in Mumbai and other cities since a couple of years now. He enthralled audience with his set. No wonder he ranks #5 on DJ MAG India Poll Top10 for 2012. The trio performing complimented each other well keeping it groovy throughout.

Doc Daneeka’s performance was superb. He played tracks from his album and some other releases. The crowd was digging the vibe the DJs were sending out. The music was Bass oriented with techno/house music kinda grooves. Doc has collaborated with some good vocalists and this gave his tracks a smooth blend. The Seductive vocals and simplistic song structures gave a warm pleasant feel. A kind of classy Sleekness that was not lost as the night got raunchier. Chicks and dudes seemed to enjoy the music alike as they engaged themselves in the drunken revelry of the weekend. It was nice to see a decent teen following for this gig. The next leg of Doc Daneeka’s Gig took place in Delhi on 2nd February where he played alongside TRAP DJs DJ Moniker & DJ Su-Real. This was hosted at T.L.R, New Delhi. This event was also a free for all. Coming up, WildCity would be presenting a tour of popular UK based DnB producer London Elektricity on 8th -9th February in Mumbai and Delhi respectively. Checkout their website or the EO event calendar for details on this.
