Mumbai based Folk/Fusion/World Music band INDO GYPSIES have won Channel [V] Launchpad Nokia IndiaFest 2013 which was held at Baga Beach, Goa on 18th Jan 2013. This contest featured the best bands from cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata and Goa.
Indo Gypsies secured their spot in the finals by advancing through the eliminations in the Pune zone on 12th Dec 2012, with two other bands. All in all, eighteen bands were selected from the seven cities for the semi-finals at Goa. It was a tough battle as all the bands gave their best, with scintillating performances and use of various exotic instruments like harp, violins, flute, dhol etc.
Out of these bands, 3 top bands were selected for the finals, including Indo Gypsies. The Finals, conducted on the same day, were judged by Raghu Dixit from the band ‘The Raghu Dixit Project’. Indo Gypsies received a rave review from the crowd with a round of applause. Raghu Dixit himself commended their performance.
The same evening was lined up with the performances of ‘The Raghu Dixit Project’ and ‘Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’. The sheer size of crowd, and their response was enthralling. During the performance of ‘Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’, they announced ‘Indo Gypsies’ as the winners of Channel [V] Launchpad Nokia IndiaFest 2013. They received this award from Raghu Dixit, and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy onstage, in front of a huge cheering crowd.
Indo Gypsies are having a great run with various achievements in the recent period such as bagging the Tata Docomo Superstar of The Year Award, opening for Indian Ocean at the prestigious Shanmukhananda Hall, winning Lokmat Yuva Nxt’s festival, and also their inclusion in the compilation album ‘Best of O.K. Listen Vol 1’, which features popular bands like Indian Ocean, The Raghu Dixit Project and Something Relevant.
“It was a great experience for us to perform on such a huge platform, and to win it. The venue in the open airs at Baga beach, Goa was extraordinarily beautiful. The sound, the crowd and the ambience was perfect. It was a magical moment for us to receive the award from the musical maestros Raghu Dixit, and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy”, commented the band.
