There are days when I wake up in the morning and the first thing I realise is that I live in the wrong era. Being a big fan of Hard Rock and with the scarcity of bands of that genre in the country, one is bound to feel in such a way. Few days back I got to know about Overhung. Overhung is one such band who are true to the spirit of the genre and live life 80’s style. The four piece band from Mumbai released their EP titled – Extended for Play (E4P), which interestingly has four songs (too many fours in this sentence). The track listing is as follows:
- Casual Bitch
- Waiting
- Waste
- You Think You’re So Cool
The EP is very interesting. With a runtime of just over 17 minutes and no fancy experimentation, Overhung gives you true, raw, undiluted music. Just like Hard Rock should be. Here is a song by song analysis of the EP:
Casual Bitch – Christened by the 80’s sound, this track reminds one of old Whitesnake or Aerosmith. I loved the guitar tone and the stereo effects used in the song, in my opinion – the best track in the EP.
Waiting – Well, frankly this song didn’t impress me much. There were issues with the right panned guitars; the notes were overshadowed by the rhythm. The solo on the other hand has a nice feel to it, perfect use of delay.
Waste – Predominantly an acoustic track; with distortion being added later on, a guitar solo with a nice feel and great use of Wah effects and then the pumpy bass lines. This track was destined to be the best among the four songs, but the little glitch with the distortion diminishing the arpeggios ruined it. I would have preferred the arpeggios any given day.
You Think You’re So Cool – My first reaction when the song started was – “Where the hell did Axl Rose come from?” The vocals are insanely similar to Axl and the overlay of vocals has been crafted to perfection. One of those tracks which make you swing along, Just what Rock n Roll is all about.
The musicianship in the album is effortless. If the glitches were not there, this would have been the perfect album. Great vocal range in display throughout and the exclusion of unnecessary experimentation earns my respect. Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll forever.
