Kunal Datta, one of the most gifted musicians I have come across lately. He has released an EP, plays multiple instruments – the guitar, saxophone, drums, harmonica to name a few, currently he is in Stanford University pursuing a double major in Engineering and Music, has his own non-profit initiative – The Downstream Foundation; which raises funds to provide clean drinking water to slums and villages in Delhi, and last but not the least – he has written a poetry book – “Rang e Noor”. All this when you’re just 19 years old! That is what prodigies are made of.

The EP has three songs –

  1. Fly (Acoustic)
  2. Run Away
  3. Fly

The songs have a nice romantic feel to them along with the simplicity in the music. Even though there have been a wide range of instruments used, never did it seem like any one of the instruments have been used unnecessarily. Everything was well planned and certainly well executed. Here is an in depth review of the songs –

Fly (Acoustic) – If you would ask me to describe this song, I would say this is a Symphony of Serenity; beautiful composition and arrangement, perfect vocals to compliment the music. It’s just one of those tracks which grows on you and takes you to another dimension. I could really connect to the music and at times I did feel like I’m in a state of deep trance. The perfect song in my opinion

Run Away – The title track is something which always interests me. But sadly, maybe due to the high expectations I had after listening to Fly, this track didn’t hit the right spot. No complains about the composition or delivery of the song, but at times it felt a little repetitive. The bass lines and the flute solo in the song blew me away though, some really nice work there

Fly – The ambience in this track is mind boggling. No fancy stuff, but still has a feeling of complexity. Frankly, I still prefer the acoustic version for its simplicity, but this track scores on the ambience part hands down.

Musicianship and recording quality is top class. No glitches whatsoever anywhere in the EP. Compositions are very simple and touchy with the lyrics adding more depth to the USP of the songs. This EP surely makes its way to my favourite songs playlist.
