Sulk Station is Tanvi Rao from Bengaluru and Rahul Giri from Nepal. Tanvi alternates between a folk Hindi and a chic dramatic cabaret style over the album. The music is electronic moving between trip-hop, post-dubstep and ambient. The act is accompanied by Kamal Singh of Lounge Piranha at some of their live events by the track ‘wait’.
The duo has been jamming for over 4 years and into full time mode from the past few years. The Album ‘Till We Appear’ was put together over a year’s time. With live performances over Delhi and Bangalore( Bflat, Bacchus, CounterCultre, The Big Junction Jam) Sulk Station has generated quite a buzz. An apt one as well, before the launch of this album, ‘Till We Appear’.
The Band has been inspired by various influence sometimes congruent some dissonant. Tanvi is a trained vocalist and digs desiragas as well as Portishead Massive Attack styled trip hop grooves. Giri is an electronica fanatic with various influences from the Young Echo Collective, Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, Nitin Sawhney and Talvin Singh. The Duo’s differences have helped it be more diverse in the projection of Sulk Station.
The Duo complements each other well. With Giri providing Deep yet organized grooves and Tanvi sly loathing in the sweetest tones to make her appealing even she is angry. The bands live acts have got more than decent responses. Though ‘Indian Subcontinent’ based, the sounds are very much in line with Trip Hop Scene in terms of production and recording. Rahul Giri has been main and only man behind the nuts and bolts of this project with the mastering of the album done by him. Giri is another dude from the Laptop Musicians club who has able to successfully get out of his experiments something satisfying and presentable.
Tracklist
Downlift: An uplifting track with arpegiatted synthesizers building over in sections. Tanvi’s vocals present a distinct flavor on this track in comparison to the rest of the album
Contentment:A slow perceptually depressive track. Tanvi the Sulk queen calls for satisfaction over Giri’s soundtrack. The minimalistic variation add to the general groove of the track. The track was picked by NH7.com in the International Indie Mixtape.
Take me home has a cinematic texture over which Tanvi’s vocals is the guide to this superhighway towards a place one would call home. The distorted effects provide the aggression the vocals intentionally avoid.
Splendor showcasesan interesting amalgamation of different thoughts and emotions balanced and throw to its extremes by Tanvi and Rahul equally.
Bindiya is a modern day version of a raag sung By Tanvi Rao very eloquently.
Confession is a ride through the urban industrial jungle with ARP baselines and reverberating vocals. The lyrics dwell on the ideas/questions of beliefs and believing in them.
Piya I and Piya II is a polyphonic ballad laid out from the heart by the duo. It is interesting how Tanvi can sound scared, sultry, careless and more across different lines. Piya II is another super track to checkout in this album.
Wait is the final track of the album featuring Kamal. Giri is a megahouse of atmospheric patterns, FX, Drum Kits, Guitar effects, arrangement skills that is portrayed well on this track as well as throughout the album.
The album has a good continuity almost close to a concept album. Divers beat pattern adds flow to the melancholic atmospheres co-created by the duo. Digitally acclaim has already them with various Blogs claiming ‘Till We Appear’ to be the must have album of the year. They have also received praise from various art groups.
