From the peaceful city of Kolkata, Intoxicate have come a long way from unstable line-ups to coming out with their first EP. We caught up with the band for a little chat about their past, present and future plans:
Eight Octaves: Tell us about the starting days of the band. Why the name Intoxicate?
Intoxicate: The starting days were very tough for the band, because of the constant line-up changes and several personal issues. But, when we had a stable set up, we just never looked back. When we were thinking about naming the band, we wanted it to be very short and powerful. We just randomly started suggesting names, and suddenly came up with the name “Intoxicate”. We all liked it and kept it.
Eight Octaves: You describe yourself as New Wave of Indian Metal-core on your Facebook page. Can you shed some light on the particular genre, as it is something we don’t get to hear too often?
Intoxicate: The grooves, song structures, guitar riffs, solos and vocal phrasing of our songs are quite different from the usual Metal-core bands that we usually listen to. Hence, came the genre.
Eight Octaves: Do you stick to some theme while composing or writing music? Like some social issues or personal experiences?
Intoxicate: While composing our songs, we don’t really stick to any such personal experiences or issues. We simply try to execute what’s in our mind at that moment through our instruments and go with the flow, and try to do what the song demands.
Eight Octaves: So, who is in charge of the composing and who are behind the lyrics?
Intoxicate: All five of us have essential roles while composing. The main riff writing is done by our guitarists Shamik and Sarbajeet and vocalist, Somagni. A few of the melodic ideas for guitars and solos come from our drummer Roop. Our bass player, Bhaskar helps out our vocalist with the phrasing and growls etc. Our lyrics are written by a close friend of ours Rohan Bose.
Eight Octaves: The new EP – Dawn of Apathy, what can we expect of it?
Intoxicate: You are definitely in for a huge surprise from our EP. The songs are quite different from the typical Metal-core music that we hear. From bone crushing breakdowns, to face melting solos, to soothing melodies, you will be mesmerized.
Eight Octaves: Your partnership with Chaos Records. How did it all begin?
Intoxicate: When were looking for a record label to release our EP with. Apparently, Chaos Records, was as interested to work with us as we were with them. That’s how it all began.
Eight Octaves: Okay, so your set in The Pit v7.0 would be a set list of all the songs from the EP, I guess. Or do you have some surprise for the fans?
Intoxicate: We will be performing all the songs from our EP at The Pit v.7. And if we tell you the surprise, it won’t be a surprise, will it?
Eight Octaves: Haha! Fair enough. What is the road ahead from here? More shows and post EP promotions in store?
Intoxicate: Yes, after our release, we plan to do a country wide EP promotion tour and definitely more shows.
