INTERVIEW – The Aston Shuffle

  • Tell us about your journey from the scratch. How has ‘ Friday Night Shuffle’ helped your career chart?

The start of our journey was waaaaay back before we started doing the Friday Night Shuffle – it’s a really great opportunity to be able to curate a 2 hour mix every week for a national radio station, and it allows us to really play far more music than we would ever be able to do at club shows alone.  So in that sense it has really allowed us to connect back to our roots as DJs.

  • What is your take on ‘ remix’ music , considering remixes in a way, took you up the ladder way back in 2006, 2007 ?

We are really strong believers in remixes as a key part of dance music, there’s so many examples of good songs being taken up another level to greatness through a great remix.  Our approach has always been to be faithful & respectful to the original song – at the end of the day, it’s someone else’s ideas on the table and you are just bringing your own approach and style to them, so it has to be all about the original song first & foremost.

  • Tell us about your inspirations. Also, if you would want to try and remake some artists’ song..which track would it be?  Also if you want to rework one of your own tracks..which one would that be?

We take a lot of inspiration from a lot of different places.  We both have differing taste in music so each of us individually are bringing different things to the table, but also our inspirations come from a wider range of places than just music. Our current tour of India is inspiring us in a big way, just the experience of exploring a place this amazing is priving to be very inspirational.  Sometimes places or people prove to be as big an inspiration as music does.

  • What do you think makes you different as a musician from the others?

That’s a very hard question! I’m not sure really, I suppose it always comes down to having an ear for a specific sound or wanting to create a particular mood that separates artists from each other.  We definitely try to create a particular mood in our music, it’s hard to express in words I guess, but we both have a very good sense of what sounds like “us” and what doesn’t, which we always try to bring to all of our music.

  • Any trivia about the famous track ‘Your Love’ that you could share with us?

Your Love came from a really special place because there was some really bad things going on in our lives at the time, and in a lot of ways this song was our way of dealing with them.  We are so happy with how massive the response to the song was considering what was going on in our lives at the time!

  • One quality that you think would help young talents make it big in the music scene?
    `

Listen to a lot of different music. Sometimes it’s easy to just retrict yourself to listening to the one genre you’re really into, but I think it’s important for people to listen really widely if they have aspirations for being involved in music.  A great song is a great song regardless of the genre, and getting an appreciation of that across genres is a really key thing.
